The EU Action Plan On Human Rights And Democracy 2020–2024 is a framework, one of purpose and direction, with a broad range of policies, tools, and political and financial instruments. This EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020-2024 is the third Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy adopted by the EU. As with the previous two Action Plans, the objective is to enhance and hone EU efforts to promote human rights and democracy worldwide.
The participants of the second High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation are committed to practical development cooperation to achieve the universal and inter-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We met in Nairobi, Kenya, on 28 November-1 December 2016 to reaffirm the spirit of partnership in which they recognized the unity of purpose, interdependence and respective responsibilities.
Open government strategies and initiatives aim to support democracy and inclusive growth. They are an important tool to increase transparency, accountability, and integrity, whilst building stronger relationships between government and citizens allowing them to participate in policy-making. As the OECD Recommendation of the Council on Open Government underlines, open government, and stakeholder participation initiatives should include specific efforts “dedicated to reaching out to the most relevant, vulnerable, underrepresented, or marginalized groups in society”. Although youth are a highly heterogeneous group with different backgrounds, skills, and capacities, they often find it more difficult than other segments of society to make their voices heard. Youth can be considered as one of the groups that requires specific efforts.
The 9 August 2022 general elections in Kenya took place in a peaceful environment overall, with fundamental democratic rights respected. Six separate votes were held at different levels concurrently and this made for a complicated process that took nearly a week to finalize, with numerous challenges emerging.
The Huduma Bill 2021 was in Parliament for its 2nd reading. The Huduma Bill proposed the largest set of changes to the legal framework governing Kenya’s identification system since before independence. If enacted, the Huduma Bill would become the single law anchoring birth and death registration, issuing identity cards, issuing passports, and governance of the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS). The draft legislation, system design, and all other decision points around the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) must be considered very carefully, comprehensively, and transparently.
The WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award is a non-profit organization financed by the City of Gothenburg, Region Västra Götaland and several member organizations and companies. It is the world’s largest sustainability award that aims to recognize and support outstanding contributions from around the world. The goal of the award is to stimulate creativity and achieve lasting synergies as it strives to strike the right balance between ecological, environmental, and social needs. The prize has been presented in Gothenburg since 2000. The WIN WIN Youth Award is an international award that aims to empower and reward young people who play an active role in the creation of a more sustainable future.
This policy paper focuses on the ARC contingency planning process in Kenya and analyses the compatibility of the development, as well as the implementation of related plans, with human rights standards. It thereby applies the human rights-based approach to climate and disaster risk financing (HRBA-CDRF) to assess the degree of compatibility, identify room for improvement, and provide recommendations addressed to the responsible actors. The methodology is based on the HRBA-CDRF with its five principles of non-discrimination and equality, participation and empowerment, transparency, accountability, and do no harm.
