The Youth Café, as a centrist non-governmental organization, therefore, calls upon all young people in the country to be not only critical examiners of government proposals but also active players in all democratic processes. The Youth Café believes that young people must get engaged in formal political processes and give their voice in drawing both today’s and tomorrow’s politics.
The Youth Café was featured on Forbes Magazine last year and this year we have been featured on two more websites-NGOSIFY and AllAfrica.com. The Youth Café is featured on both these articles for the projects we work in under our eight priority areas featured in our Theory of Change, in this case, mainly ‘Governance and Political inclusion-Accountability & Remittances’ and ‘Business, job Creation and Entrepreneurship.’ , as well as the ways in which we empower the youths in Africa.
The coming into force of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 broadened the scope of protection of children rights in Kenya. Being the supreme law, constitutional protection bears more weight than statutory provisions. The Constitution recognizes children as being among the vulnerable groups in the country in need of special care and protection from the state.
The former Kenyan constitutional dispensation made no mention of persons with disabilities. The 1963 Constitution outlawed discrimination on various grounds such as race, tribe, colour but omitted discrimination on the basis of disability. This evidences the manner in which the previous legal system overlooked the rights of persons with disabilities. However, other sectors made efforts in championing for these rights. For instance, 1980 was declared by the government as the National Year for People with Disabilities to promote the awareness and sensitization of their rights and needs to the wider society
The promulgation of the 2010 Constitution marked the onset of a series of gender responsive laws as it is centered on the principle of equality. Right from the preamble, the Constitution recognizes the principle of equality as one of the national values. The equality clause, Article 27, acknowledges the right of equal treatment of men and women in all spheres of life.
