Advocacy Action Plan | Supporting Youth-Led Advocacy In Democratic Governance

A group of diverse African young people and youth-led organisations from different regions came together to analyse and discuss how to address the changes and advance democratic processes tailored to their specific needs.

This was in the guidance of the Menu of Possible Commitments aimed at increasing youth participation in democratic processes globally, where only Seven Countries (Zambia, Kenya, Botswana, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius and the Democratic Republic of Congo) of the 54 African countries have submitted their written commitments. It was apparent that the challenges that young people face are too complex for any single youth or organisation to tackle alone, hence the need to foster peer- to-peer collaboration.

The Ignite African Youth Project Team created a set of shared goals, strategies and actionable steps that are sustainable and can positively influence democratic behaviours and policy outcomes in the region.

This action plan is a result of the Youth-Led Advocacy in Democratic Governance toolkit aimed to facilitate and enhance the advocacy efforts in the democratic processes of young people especially young women in Africa. The toolkit is a true youth regional community effort and we want to thank the diverse young people, who shared their ideas, talents, time and commitment.

This is a blueprint for action and to be successful, we need support from all sectors of our regional community, including local government, civic organizations, businesses, faith leaders and residents. Please consider what you or your organization can do to help us achieve the goals outlined in the action plan and join the movement to enhance youth engagement, in active and meaningful roles in the democratic processes in Africa
