The "Agritech Kenya County Fair 2024" is set to take place in Kajiado County, Kenya, from the 16th to 17th of February 2024 at Fred’s Ranch, Kajiado County. There has been a notable increase in population growth in urban and peri-urban regions in Kenya, leading to heightened competition for limited food resources. With a rapidly growing global population and a significant youth demographic in Africa, the demand for food is set to rise substantially. With its youthful population, Kenya has a unique opportunity to embrace innovative agricultural technologies and learn, adapt, and upscale them. Considering that most of our food is cultivated in rural areas, it's crucial to emphasize urban agriculture to reduce our overreliance on rural food production and achieve a more balanced food supply.
Promoting food production in urban and peri-urban areas in concurrence with rural development will alleviate the strain on the government's finances and bolster the nation's food reserves. This event will bring together various stakeholders within agriculture and technology, from young farmers to agri-entrepreneurs, policymakers, and technology enthusiasts. The "Agritech Kenya County Fair 2024" is a landmark event that paves the way for the future of agriculture driven by a new generation of young farmers in Kenya. This event addresses critical issues in food systems, technology, and youth engagement from a bottom-up indulgence approach.
Redefining Food Systems for a Growing Population
With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, more than half of this number will reside in Africa, with an estimated 55 million in Kenya. Moreover, the majority of this population will be below 25 years old. This demographic shift presents a significant opportunity for economic growth and improved livelihoods through innovative agriculture technologies. The path to achieving food and nutrition security at the household level involves adopting a bottom-up approach, ultimately leading to macro food security at the national level. To achieve this, concerted efforts among stakeholders are essential, mainly focusing on rural, peri-urban, and urban populations, where hunger and malnutrition are most acute.
Adopting Technology for Sustainable Ecological Agriculture:
While governments and development partners have undertaken programs to ensure food and nutrition security in rural areas, there is a growing and pressing need to address peri-urban and urban food security. The "Agritech Kenya County Fair" recognizes the potential of young people, women, and children in transforming the agricultural landscape. It requires deepened investments in sustainable food production initiatives such as county-based homegrown school feeding programmes and green agri-tech jobs for youth. The event will emphasize the importance of sustainable food production methods and harnessing technological advancements from across the globe.
Kenya's Agricultural Potential:
Kenya's agriculture sector is poised for significant growth, driven by increased investments in evolving agricultural infrastructure, appropriate farm mechanization, and new crop varieties. The country is on track to be self-sufficient in crucial crops, such as maize, pulses, and oilseeds. To align with these efforts, Innovative Academic Placement Solutions (INAPS), backed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, is organizing the "AGRITECH KENYA COUNTY FAIR 2024." This event will be a hub for interacting with and bringing the latest technologies and innovations in agriculture.
